Housing Can Be Used for Good (an End-of-Year Story)

by Paul Watson | Dec 1, 2023 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

To close out the year, we want to share a story that began with a disaster but ended well. It’s also a story that highlights our mission of using housing to positively transform lives.

Earlier this year, Self Discovery Transitional Living Program, a Durham nonprofit that provides housing for vulnerable populations, was using a house we built to house 11 men. That was, until the house caught fire, leaving these men suddenly without a home and with nowhere to go.

We happened to just be finishing another house around the corner, and these men were able to move right in. But they wouldn’t be there for long.

You see, they eventually moved back into the house that caught fire (once we gutted, renovated, and updated it).

On November 1st, the men who had once moved out moved back in. And because of the repairs and updates we made, it’s better than ever.

So, what happened to the house around the corner that temporarily housed these men? Self Discovery is now using it for other vulnerable folks who are at-risk of homelessness.

And we couldn’t be happier that this nonprofit is using our houses. Because Self Discovery helps us complete our mission of creating housing that transforms lives for the better. They agree with us that housing in NC can be used for good–and they’re making a big difference in the lives of many throughout North Carolina.

We hope you have a wonderful Christmas and close out 2023 on a positive note. And if you’d like to learn more about Self Discovery, click here: https://www.selfdiscoverync.org/.
